The Supplier Part-Number is a very important field, since it correctly identifies the product to us, our suppliers and our clients.

I will give you a practical example:
We are distributors and we represent major brands (Samsung, LG, and 80 others)
We sell to reselers that have also they're online shops
The reference is my internal number, from witch they do they're purchases and use to identify it with us. it is the only 100% accurate field.
Then the Suplier PN is used for the model of the product. For Example, Toshiba 58L9363DG.
And i export a price list for the clients that has to have, besides the price, this 2 fields.
